Description
In this new course aimed at tutors in the arts, participants will learn how to set up and run up a Junior Music Ensemble. This will be a practical and in-person course. Over the course of 4 weeks, students will learn about:
- The practicalities and logistics of setting up an ensemble, including sourcing funding, venues and instruments
- What makes an ensemble successful
- Effective teaching methods
- Sourcing repertoire and arranging your own music
- Conducting / directing
- Classroom management
- Ways to make the ensemble fun
- Looking at case studies of existing groups
- Creating ideas for performances
- Some tips on networking and connecting with other existing junior performance groups

Tutors
Ciara Cavanagh
Ciara is a freelance violinist and music teacher. She plays violin with a number of orchestras and chamber music groups in the Dublin area. She is a member of the Botanic String Quartet and regularly performs with quartets and bands at events and festivals across Ireland.
Ciara is a member of the teaching staff on the Royal Irish Academy of Music’s Diploma in Community and Group Music Teaching. She has many years experience teaching violin and piano in both individual and group settings and has tutored the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, Royal Irish Academy of Music performing groups and Dublin Youth Orchestras as well as worked with the Young Irish Strings. In 2012, she worked with Dublin City Council to lead a music workshop aimed at Primary School children. Ciara co-founded the Offbeat Ensemble, a late-starters orchestra based on the north side of Dublin in 2013, and is co-director of the group. She currently teaches in a number of primary school strings projects in the Dublin area.
Ciara is also a creative producer and project manager and has worked with an extensive range of musicians, artists and organisations. As well as her teaching and performance qualifications, Ciara also holds a BA hons in The History of Art from Trinity College Dublin and an MA in Cultural Management from The University of Catalonia, Spain.
