Black and White - Colours of the Piano
An exploration of keyboard repertoires and performers from the Baroque Era to the present day.
Description
Presented by pianist Connor Wilcox, this course presents a unique opportunity for all Music Appreciators to explore keyboard repertoires from the Baroque era to the present “up close” through talks and performances from renowned performers and RIAM students, and to experience the music from a different perspective than what might be experienced in a formal recital or concert setting.
Course topics include:
18th century - Bach - Court Dances and Counterpoint.
18th century - Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven - Classicism and Proportion.
19th century - Chopin and Liszt - Virtuosity and Romanticism.
20th century - Ravel and Debussy - Impressionism and Colour
20th century - Schönberg, Berg, and Webern - Atonality, Serialism and the Second Viennese School.
Tutors
Connor Wilcox
Connor is a Scottish pianist based in Dublin. He is currently following a programme of doctoral study at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, under the tutelage of Anthony Byrne. Connor enjoys a varied life of performing and teaching.
Most recently, he has given solo recitals in the NCH John Field Room (2024), Limerick St Mary’s Cathedral (2023), Dublin St Ann’s Church (2022) and St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh (2022). Previously, Connor was a post-graduate student at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, UK, during which time he performed at the Ulverston International Music Festival (2019), and the Birmingham International Chamber Music Festival (2018).
Connor is also very fortunate to enjoy working as a collaborative pianist, most recently interning with Opera Collective Ireland as an assistant repetiteur for the company’s production of Handel’s Semele (2022). Connor also lectures in music theory at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and University College Dublin.
