String Quartet Coaching Classes (Adv. Level)

Chamber Music coaching classes for string quartet musicians.

Description

Advanced Coaching for String Quartet

6-week intensive programme (2 hours per session)

Designed for advanced-level musicians, this professional ensemble coaching programme offers a unique opportunity to refine your expertise in chamber music performance. Tailored for string quartets, these sessions allow musicians to enhance their technical precision, ensemble cohesion, and artistic interpretation under the guidance of a distinguished RIAM tutor.

With a flexible, non-prescriptive syllabus, participants can propose their own repertoire for a deeply personalised exploration of musical expression. The focus is on cultivating a sophisticated understanding of the chosen works and elevating your performance to captivate discerning audiences.

In addition to the 12 hours of ensemble coaching, participants will also receive a 1:1 session (60 minutes)* with their tutor, offering dedicated time to address individual challenges and receive professional mentorship for ongoing development.

These advanced coaching classes are ideal for established string quartets, as well as individual string players eager to collaborate with fellow professionals in an ensemble setting.

* 1:1 time with the tutor (to be scheduled individually)

Prerequisites

Participants must be 18+

These classes are suitable for former Junior RIAM students with a min. Grade 7+ in a standard string quartet instrument (e.g. Violin, Viola and Cello).

Participation is subject to an application process (as part of the registration).

William Butt was born in London and started his musical career early as a chorister in St Georges Chapel, Windsor Castle.

After graduating from the RNCM with Moray Welsh, he then continued his studies at McGill University in Montreal with Antonio Lysy.

He has since enjoyed a busy career as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher.

He has performed and broadcast all the major concerti for RTE Lyric FM (NSO/ RTECO) and for BBC Radio 3. He has performed as soloist with the Ulster Orchestra, as recitalist and also appeared on the popular programme ‘In Tune’. In recital, he has regularly toured in Europe and China. As well as performing the formidable solo sonatas of Ligeti, Rautavaara and Kodály. He has recorded the suites by Britten and Bach for Warner Classics. Both recordings received outstanding reviews in the UK and international press.
With Pianist Lance Coburn he has also recorded the Cello Sonata by Michele Esposito for Champs Hill Records.

In autumn 2024 his recording of all the Beethoven Sonatas and Variations with Lance Coburn will be released by Guild.

William is a member of the Esposito String Quartet. They tour regularly and have worked and recorded with many exciting and prominent contemporary composers.

He is passionate about his teaching and is Professor of cello at the RIAM in Dublin. Playing on a fine cello made by Giovanni Grancino in Milan (1690).
