Uncovering the formation and transformations of the genre through individual, sociocultural, and economic influences. Live in-person and online (Ireland) / On-demand recorded sessions (Ireland and USA)

Description

This course will be held live in-person at the RIAM and online (Ireland only) or can be watched on-demand, e.g. recorded sessions (Ireland & USA).

Please note: There will be no class on the 17th of March (St. Patrick's Day) and the 7th of April (Good Friday)

 

History of Rock is a course designed to familiarize participants with an accurate narrative timeline, songs, and the people who shaped the development of Rock music. Prominent players and groups of each era will be covered, as well as sociological, economic, and cultural factors that lead to the many styles of Rock music. Extensive in-session listening and demonstrations/performances from Rock musicians will help enhance the learning experience. Most importantly, YOUR prior knowledge and musical preferences will help guide the exploration.

 

Timothy Norris will:

- Examine rock music through its stylistic development, influence, and social context.

- Guide course participants in developing basic listening skills as applied to the study of rock music.

- Communicate the application of musical fundament

Tutors

Timothy Norris

Timothy comes to Dublin, Ireland most recently holding the post of Managing Artistic Director of Rainbow City Performing Arts, Seattle’s premiere LGBTQI+ music ensembles, where he co-founded the Reign City Riot, the band for the Reign FC, the top US women’s football team. While in Seattle he also served as Teaching Artist and Assistant Musical Director for Public Works at Seattle Repertory Theater.

Prior to living in Seattle Timothy was the Managing Artistic Director of the Oak Lawn Band and a Director/Instructor for the Meadows School of the Arts of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. During his seven years living in the DFW Metroplex, he performed with and conducted ensembles both nationally and abroad from the Meadows Wind Ensemble, the Cathedral of Hope Orchestra/Choir, Turtle Creek Chorale, touring Pop/Rock and theater orchestras (with artists such as Jane Monheit, Michael Bublé, and Phil Collins), multiple school ensembles and musical theater programs in Texas and Ohio, to the Bucharest National Symphony of Romania, the Chisinau National Chamber Orchestra in Moldova, and multiple Musicians Without Boarders orchestras in Haiti.

Tim holds advanced degrees in instrumental conducting and orchestral/opera performance from Southern Methodist University and Ohio University, and undergraduate degrees in trombone performance and education with a minor in composition and voice from Ohio State University where he also sang with the Singing Men of Ohio and arranged/played with the Marching 110. In conjunction with his education, he worked for several years to bolster Ohio's musical culture by serving in the community as: Assistant Conductor to the Ohio University Symphony Orchestra and Opera; Musical Director of the Ohio Valley Summer Theater; Conductor of the Athens String Orchestra; Assistant Band Director for Athens City Schools; Assistant Director of the Athens Community Music School, and trombone/vocalist with bands such as The Royales, Up Town Funk Allstars, and The Kitchen Syncopators.

Tim got his start in music as a performer, teacher, and musical director with Straw Hat Theater in Ashtabula Ohio, and a mentorship program with the Cleveland Playhouse. He has now musically directed and vocal coached over 20 productions including Annie Get Your Gun. Annie, Pippin, the Sound of Music, The Last Five Years, Peter Pan, The Secret Garden, The Pajama Game, The Wizard of Oz, Once Upon A Mattress, Man of La Mancha, Rocky Horror Show, Hansel and Gretel, and the Magic Flute across the US and abroad. Tim has taught courses from musicianship/theory, conducting fundamentals and score study, History of Rock and Roll, to The Art of Listening for students of all ages and backgrounds. In addition to his musical leadership, Tim is an active arts administrator in the community and most recently served as the Senior IT Director at Seattle Repertory Theater. He is excited to get back to the classroom and bring his unique instruction style to the Royal Irish Academy of Music in 2023.
